While the school year is almost over, juniors will not be slowing down, so here’s what you need to know:

According to College Board, as a junior you should be talking to your counselors and teachers about what classes you need to graduate high school and get into college. You should’ve had a meeting with your counselor to discuss scheduling for next year between Jan. 23 and Feb. 3.

Talking to counselors and teachers about college, if you’re interested in getting a secondary education, can be helpful in discovering the right path for you. If you don’t feel that you have someone to discuss your future with, try using College Board’s College Search quiz to enter your preferences for school size, location and majors offered. This is a good place to start if you know what you want or where you want to be but don’t have specific colleges in mind.

By spring, if you are taking AP classes, think about signing up for those AP tests. Scores of a three, four and five have the possibility of getting you some college credit! At a Texas public university, if you get a three, by law the school is required to give you credit for it. A ninety-dollar, four hour test in return for hundreds, or thousands of dollars in college classes are well-worth the lack of sleep.

Register for the SAT and ACT if you haven’t already! Taking these tests at the end of your junior year and over the summer will relieve some the stress of getting them done before college applications are due (in Nov., Dec., etc.). Additionally, taking these early will give you a chance to retake them if you need to. These are the registration deadlines for the 2017 SAT and ACT:

  • March 11 SAT late registration deadline: Feb. 28
  • May 6 SAT registration deadline: April 7
  • June 3 SAT registration deadline: May 9
  • April 8 ACT registraion deadline: March 3
  • June 10 ACT registration deadline: May 5

*ACT can be taken at FRHS or KHS

Over the summer, try to visit some colleges! While you do get TWO excused college visits during your junior and senior year, get them out of the way in the summer so you can focus on school. You still have to pass your senior year, colleges look at all your grades throughout high school, not just 9th-11th grade.

Timber Creek is hosting a “Just for Juniors Night” to receive information on getting financial aid, as well as the college admissions process, SAT/ACT,graduation requirements/credits and post high school options. The counselors want to help you! Come out on Feb. 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center to get this information.
