Elections were held Nov. 2 across the country for local, state, and federal offices that shocked the political field. A number of candidates made their mark on history with historic election firsts and diversifying American politics.

Heres a collection of trailblazing candidates whose election victories made the history books.

Winsome Sears (R-VA)

Winsome Sears will be Virginia’s next lieutenant governor, becoming the first female and the first woman of color to hold the office. 

Michelle Wu (D-MA)

Michelle Wu will become Boston’s next mayor making her the first woman and person of color elected to the top postition in the city’s history.

Ed Gainey (D-PA)

Pennsylvania State Rep. Ed Gainey was elected to be the first Black mayor of Pittsburgh.

Aftab Pureval (D-OH)

Aftab Pureval was elected mayor of Cincinnati, becoming the first ever Asian American to hold the position. 

Bruce Herral (D-WA)

Bruce Herrell will become Seattle’s very first Asian American Mayor in the city’s 170 year old history.

Elaine O’Neal (D-NC)

Elaine O’Neil was elected to be Durham, North Carolina’s first Black woman Mayor in the city’s history.
