The foreign language department will celebrate National German Week from Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4. In order to partake in the cultural spirit of National German Week, take pride in each of the theme days. The theme days are as follows:
Monday, Sept. 30 – Schwarz-Rot-Gold Day
Start the week strong by taking pride in the German culture and language and wear Schwarz-Rot-Gold. Sporting the red, black, and gold colors of the German flag will be sure to show support for Germany in the melting pot that is America.
Tuesday, Oct. 1 – Famous German-Americans Day
Hats off to German immigrants and German-Americans! Wear a hat in support of the contributions of German-Americans in every walk of life such as actors, athletes, artists, entrepreneurs, fashion designers, musicians, politicians, scientists, teachers, filmmakers, and writers.
Wednesday, Oct. 2 – German-American Culture Day
From Christmas trees to Kindergarten and hot dogs to recreation, German-Americans have contributed significantly to American life and culture. Take pride in the blending of cultures, and celebrate the German-American culture on Wednesday.
Thursday, Oct. 3 – Day of German Unity
Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Day of German Unity) is a German national holiday, commemorating the anniversary of German reunification in 1990. The Day of German Unity is celebrated each year with a Bürgerfest hosted by a major city, this year Kiel, with the motto “mut verbindet,” meaning “courage connects” in English. Rejoice in the unity of culture on Thursday.
Friday, Oct. 4 – National Teach German Day
End the week by honoring German teachers for National Teach German Day. This is a celebration of German teaching and learning, designed to recognize the important role that German teachers play in our schools and communities, and encourage the next generation of German teachers. Thank German teachers for spending their time educating students.
