Keller ISD’s annual Chad Powell Special Olympics Track Meet will take place Wednesday, March 27 and the 2nd Annual Walk, Run, Push Special Needs Fun Run and 5K will be held Wednesday, April 24.

Once they have arrived to the event, buddies will be paired with their athletes and spend the day cheering them on through their various events. The goal of the special olympics is not only to take home a mass of ribbons, although that is a very important aspect, but mostly it is to guarantee that everyone has the best day possible.

Due to bad weather, the Walk, Run, Push has been postponed until April 24 and will now take place at Keller Middle School. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the general public 5K followed by the Special Needs Mile.

“This is the first time we are doing the 5K,” said event coordinator, Lindsey Geasland. “So the Keller Police have stepped up huge to help, as well as the Wellness Coordinator, Janiel Werner.”

The event was created by Geasland’s daughter, Kinsey Geasland. Upon witnessing the lack of inclusiveness in many events, Kinsey decided to make a change and develop her own Special Needs Fun Run for everybody to participate in. For the second occasion, the Geaslands hope to have a bunch of runners for both the 5K and the 1-mile Fun Run. There is a $22 entry fee with an event t-shirt included in the purchase. Those wishing to participate can sign up as a Runner, Business Sponsor, Ghost Runner, or Volunteer.

“We need volunteers for set-up, course monitors, tshirt/registration table, and clean-up crew people,” said Geasland. “Any help is greatly appreciated and high school students can earn service hours for anything they need it in.”

To register as a volunteer, you can go to this link and fill out the form. For any other position, you can sign-up at the Keller ISD webstore using the search word ‘SPED’. Event packets will need to be picked up on Thursday, April 11, or Friday, April 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the Keller ISD admin building located at 350 Keller Pkwy.

All proceeds from the Walk, Run, Push event will be donated to the KISD Special Olympics program. Anyone seeking to support the members of their community or simply have a great time by being active is encouraged to sign up for this event.
