The theatre department is presenting “Treasure Island,” which will be bringing the children’s story to the stage Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7 in the auditorium.

“It was definitely not like our typical show,” junior Sydnee Jones said. “[I’m] excited to see all the hard work this amazing cast has put in.”

Working around the schedule of the One Act play and through other conflicts, the cast has had a total of 18 rehearsals spread out sporadically over the course of February and March. In that time, they built a set of wooden structures designed to be moved and shaped during the show to fit their fictional location needs. Because the show is based in a make-believe world, imagination has been a crucial part of the preparation process.

“If we don’t imagine what it’s like being a character in Treasure Island, then audience won’t believe and the play will be a flop,” senior Ruth Ngeny said. “The whole crew and cast as a whole has to create the story [in order] to wow the audience in that adventure.”

Similar to the 2002 Disney movie ‘Treasure Planet’, the shows share the same plot line, but instead of the main character Jim Hawkins being a teenage boy, it’s a 10 year old girl who will be played by Sydnee Jones. Over the past two months, Jones has been working hard to get into character.

“I have a lot of younger cousins and I also work with kids at church so I’ve been observing their behaviors, especially how they interact with adults,” Jones said, explaining her process for getting into the mindset of a child. “Jim is a really fun character. She’s more outgoing than I am I would say [and] she’s definitely a fighter. She loves her friends and family and would do anything for [them].”

With countless hours spent on the making of this production, the cast and crew members of Treasure Island are eager to show off their hard work to a lively audience.

“I’m excited for the audience to use their imagination for the show and just to go on the adventure to Treasure Island with us,” Ngeny said.

Tickets will be sold at the doors of the auditorium for $10 at each production time.
