Prom serves as a memorable milestone in a fleeting high school career, heels click against the floor, dresses brush the floor and the music crescendos from the speakers as students sway to the beat. This year for the Special Needs Prom, volunteers have banded together to create a Girls Ready Room offering free hair and makeup services the afternoon before the dance Saturday, Feb. 16.

Hair and makeup will be offered from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the Central High School Dance Room. Girls can choose from any of the five available slots at 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to receive service from one of the volunteers. Makeup utensils and products will be sanitized between appointments to ensure safety for each student.

“I used to do a lot with special needs kids in middle school… and I missed it,” said Dovers. “I decided I should extend my talents to those who deserve it most.”

Six students are offering their artistry and experience within the freelance makeup community to girls attending the special needs prom. Seniors, Emma Dovers, Sarah Mizell, Karen Sager and Cassie Morrison, and junior Devin McDunn share an extreme desire to make each girl feel special and accentuate their beauty even more on this important night.

“Prom is a night for everyone to feel beautiful and have fun with their friends,” Mizell said. “These students deserve nothing but the best prom and that’s exactly what we plan on giving them.”

Mizell is especially thrilled to join this opportunity after getting the chance to work with some the students last year as a mentor for partner theatre. The experience was incredibly heart warming and left a massive impact on Mizell personally.

“I have already connected with these wonderful kids once through my love of theatre,” Mizell said. “I want to keep spreading the love through my passion of [cosmetology].”

“All but one of the girls doing doing makeup are seniors,” Dovers said. “But I hope [we] inspire others to carry the tradition next year”.
