With their next game against Central High School on Jan. 8, the Timber Creek Girls Varsity Basketball Team has proved their perseverance in this season, currently 12-8. Finishing off a three day tournament in Waco, Texas during the winter break, going 4-2 in the competition, the team will be facing off at 6 p.m., at Timber Creek.

While the season hasn’t gone as previously planned, team captain Mele Kailahi has strived to hold the players accountable for their roles on the team, expecting each player on the team to work their hardest, no matter the outcome.

“It’s all a process and we aren’t discouraged just yet,” said Kailahi. “This is only my second year with this program and as far as last year, we have a different team so a lot has changed for us this year. We’ve had our downfalls and from here we can only go up, so I expect the outcome to be a hard fought battle that we all contributed something whether we get the dub or take an L.”

Taking on a newer, persevering mindset, the team’s coaches have incorporated several new training plans in order to improve the team’s defensive strategies and playing style, furthering players like Kailahi’s dedication to the game both on and off the court in order to improve. Finding new ways to improve the game daily, players like freshman KJ Walker and senior Robin Nunley have proven key to the team’s success, stepping into leadership for the team during any challenge.

“[Walker] has also been a big scorer for us with her attacking and finishing as well as hitting some big threes for us…She brings up and handles the ball controlled,” Kailahi commented. “[Nunley] gives 110% every time she’s in. She hustles after lose balls and crashes the board. She knows her role and is eager to do whatever it takes to do what’s best for our team. Although we went 4-2 [in Waco], we proved to ourselves what we are capable of, and picked each other up from the last few games in district. We know what we need to work on and we’re coming together to improve every practice.”
