The 2018 Academy Awards (the Oscars) took place on March 4 and was filled with many historic moments this year.

Guillermo del Toro took home best director and best picture for his romantic fantasy The Shape of Water. In his acceptance speech for best director, the award winning director said, “I am an immigrant” and “the greatest thing art does…is erase the lines in the sand,” and that the movie industry should continue to do so.

Hollywood actresses Annabella Sciorra, Ashley Judd and Salma Hayek addressed the Weinstein sexual assault, that shook the industry this previous year. Through a powerful speech, they told the world that despite the long journey ahead, slowly a new path has emerged.

The Chilean movie A Fantastic Woman won for best foreign film, bringing the country its first Oscar. According to Buzzfeed News, the film made history as the first feature to win with a trans storyline and a trans actor (Daniela Vega) as its lead.

Last but not least, Jordan Peele became the first African American to win the award for best original screenplay for his critically acclaimed horror Get Out. In his speech, the 39-year-old director, claimed that he “stopped writing this movie about 20 times because I thought it was impossible,…but I kept coming back to it because I knew if someone let me make this movie, that people would hear it and people would see it.”
