There is no argument, the Timber Creek Debate team is ready to defeat their opponents in the upcoming competition season.

The Timber Creek Debate team has had a good start to a potentially great year, going undefeated at Lovejoy High School in the preliminary rounds of Lincoln-Douglas debate, the most common competitive debate style.

The Debate team is made up of several groups, that compete in a plethora of competitions. They compete in categories such as Congressional, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum and Policy. Each team has on average from a week to a month to set up their case, or their argument for or against the resolution. The team hopes to improve in the Policy debate category, in which two teams debate whether to change a particular law in the United States Federal Government.

Each student has to attend a practice after school at least once a week that can last to an hour and 30 minutes, as well as practice during school.

“I love the team I’ve put together,” sponsor Debbie Begley said. “I spent 17 hours with them last weekend, so we have a really tight-knit group here.”

During the 2016-17 school year, the team won three to zero at the last three tournaments and then won district. They are currently working hard to prepare for the upcoming season, spending on average about four hours a practice week.

“We are like a family,” said junior Abby Pinkerton. “I love my teammates. We all balance each other out really well and we are able to bring out the best in each other.”
