Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Pence, is an American politician and attorney. Pence was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2000. Pence nonetheless virtually checked every single box of Trump’s wishes for a running mate.
At the beginning of the election, Trump had a hard time appealing to the right wing of conservatives. Mike Pence was popular among the evangelical conservatives – a group with mixed feelings of Trump being president. Pence is viewed as an established and dependable politician by Republicans both in his home state and Washington.
Although, the vice presidential candidate doesn’t see eye to eye with Trump on all of the issues. Unlike Trump, Pence wants to make abortion illegal even in cases of rape and incest. Pence has gone as far as co-sponsoring a controversial proposal back in 2011 to redefine rape cases connected to abortion laws as “forcible rape.”
Pence also pushed for a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage in 2006. In Pence’s speech about same sex marriage he cited a Harvard researcher, “societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.” Pence has also said, “being gay is a choice and keeping gays from marrying was no discrimination, but rather an enforcement of God’s idea.” He opposed The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a law that would prohibit discrimination against LGBT people in a workplace. The law would have banned discrimination against people based on sexual and gender identity. In 2007, Pence voted against the law and later said, “the law wages war on freedom and religion in the workplace.” Pence rejected the Obama administration directive on transgender bathrooms. In May, the federal government directed school districts to allow students to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. Pence opposed Obama’s direction that he was going with the law and called it’s a state issue. “The federal government has no business getting involved in issues of this nature,” Pence said.
In 2000, Trump said that he supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act to “include a ban of discrimination based on sexual orientation.”
Mike Pence is opposed to granting amnesty for people who come into the United States without proper authorization. He supports increased border security, likewise with Trump. Pence said that undocumented immigrants in the United States would be treated “humanely” under Trump and his administration, but provided no explanation on how they would deal with the millions currently living and working peacefully in the country. “We’re going to enforce the laws of this country. We’re going to make sure that we essentially end illegal immigration once and for all,” Pence commented.
“And when all of that happens, then, as a nation, we can give consideration to how we resolve issues around those that remain. We’ll do it humanely. We’ll do it with the compassion of the American people.”
When Trump called for a ban on Muslim migration to the United States, Pence took to Twitter to share his thoughts. He called the proposal “offensive and unconstitutional.” Trump initially said that Syrian refugees should be taken in, but he quickly changed his opinion.
As they are running mates, their opinions on key issues of the election differ a bit. Nonetheless, they are virtually the same.
