REVIEW: “Grease” is the Word

“Grease” is the word. Almost 300 students, not including the teaching staff, from all four Keller ISD high schools banded together to produce the first District Wide Musical, Grease. The cast of Grease kicks it into high gear from Thursday to Sunday for their two week run in late Oct. For two months, they have revved their engines in rehearsals to produce the best musical in Keller ISD history.

Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in town, and Danny Zuko, the school’s coolest greaser, have a secret summertime romance- but when they get back to school, everything is different. Sandy attempts to navigate the tricky Rydell High School social waters and catch Danny’s attention again, but Danny is chiefly concerned with maintaining his tough-guy reputation.

The Blue Cast led by Caleb Shaw as Danny Zuko from Timber Creek and Jessica Healey as Sandy Dumbrowski from Central wow’ed the audience by delivering a performance full of chemistry, humor and energy.

Soloists Hollind Hardy from Central and Megan Kee from Keller included the audience in the opening and closing numbers, “Grease is the Word”, adding liveliness and immediate engagement in the show. Noah Thomas from Central “spits mad bars” in the closing number.

The set was a stationary set with backdrops “flying” in. It was tastefully crafted by a team of 28 student set crew members working under Brain Ketcham, Grease’s scenic designer, from Keller High School. The set crew created visual board with every song title in the show which illuminated when the song was being performed.

The only thing that could use improvement is the audio. During our show the sound was done by a Central sound technician, the microphones of certain characters weren’t working while they were singing or delivering their lines. This was a consistent problem throughout the show starting with the very first number. Besides this minor problem, the cast of Grease hit it out of the park.

Grease will be ending their two week run on Oct 30. Be sure not to miss your chance to see it.
