The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) sponsors the annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Hebron High School. VASE is a visual arts competition where students can enter their teacher-supervised school artwork to compete against other high school students by region, who have taken the same amount of art courses.

Students wanting to enter VASE must have a parent or guardian sign a permission sheet to enter a maximum of two pieces and ride buses over to Hebron High School to attend the competition. Permission sheets are available from all Timber Creek art teachers. Students must also be passing all classes according to UIL rules, enrolled in a TCHS art class, and must have created the artwork individually under the supervision of a TCHS art teacher between March 2015 and February 2016. All artwork must be original. Copying, using images from the internet, or tracing from a projector is not allowed.

Eligible artworks include originally created drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, electronic images, videos, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media works. 2-D works can be no larger than 24” x 36” including the matte. 3-D works can be no larger than 3′ high by 3′ wide by 3′ tall. Any photos a student uses for reference must be attached and students must obtain verbal permission if a model was used for their artwork.

Once entered in the competition, students will have to complete an information sheet on their submitted artwork, as well as an interview with a professional artist or art educator. The interview will last 5-10 minutes, and questions will be asked about your submitted artwork. A worksheet is filled out prior to the event which prepares the student for the interview.

Any further information can be found on the permission sheet or from a TCHS art teacher.

During the 2014-15 school year, 34 Timber Creek artists advanced to the state level of the VASE competition, with 19 students winning all-state honors and four TCHS students receiving the “gold seal” award — the highest award given at the competition.
