Competing at the TX-USA Wrestling State Freestyle and Greco Championships on May 20 and May 21, 2017, juniors Will Caillet and Nathan Grimes represented Timber Creek in these Olympic Styles of wrestling.

With Caillet taking fourth place in the Greco wrestling division and Grimes, at 182 pounds, becoming the first ever Timber Creek wrestler to take first place in both styles. Having to sign up and weigh in before their events as well as face off some of the most challenging competitors, the two athletes showcased their strengths that they have been improving upon throughout their entire year.

“During my best wrestling matches, I let my mind go,” said Grimes. “Training really kicks in and if you’re thinking, you’ve missed your opportunity. You just have to keep moving and commit to your moves. I wasn’t motivated to go, I was motivated to win, [and] I represented the school to the best of my abilities.”

With coaches like Tyler Harrison, the athletes are pushed yearly to meet their goals to their fullest constantly and consistently, just as Harrison has done for Grimes.

“Coach Harrison…has always been there for me,” said Grimes. “He fights for points out on the mat and I can always trust him to come through for me… so it’s been easy to just go out there and be relaxed when things that are wrong take place. [He pushes me, and] I’ve trained relentlessly ever since the UIL season ended. Winning state this year, and what I plan to do over the summer is just the start; [I’m] always hungry for more.”
